A death that occurred abroad can also be recorded—that is, entered—in a German death registry upon your request. This so-called “retroactive registration” applies also to German citizens who died abroad and were not resident in Germany.

With a retroactive registration, an entry is made in a German death registry in addition to the registration abroad—that is, in addition to the entry in the death registry of the country where the death occurred.

Under certain conditions, you can apply for this subsequent registration at the responsible German civil registry office.
