With the Habitats Directive, the EU member states have committed themselves to creating the NATURA 2000 ecological network. To this end, they must designate, protect and, if necessary, develop certain areas. The directive specifies the technical basis for this as well as the necessary procedures.
The EU Birds Directive, which was adopted back in 1979, contains comparable regulations, although these relate exclusively to bird species.
The protected areas created under these two directives form the NATURA 2000 network.
