With these words, Lord Mayor Frank Klingebiel honored long-standing council and local council members for their commitment.
His recognition and appreciation went to long-standing local political volunteers. The Lower Saxony Association of Cities and Towns paid special tribute to men and women who have been active in local politics for at least 25 years.
"With great commitment and a great sense of responsibility, you have helped to further develop our city and put it in a good position. It deserves respect, it deserves recognition to spend a lot of your own energy, a lot of your own time and energy in order to be active as a citizen, as a volunteer," emphasized the Lord Mayor.
The volunteers had gone into local politics to make a difference in Salzgitter. "What you have decided is immediately visible and tangible, it affects our citizens directly. Because local politics covers all areas of life. It deals with economic, social and cultural issues; kindergartens and schools, housing and road construction, work and business, culture and sport. That's what makes local politics so exciting."
Exercising one's mandate well and meeting its demands requires a great deal of commitment - more than the public sometimes thinks. After all, it is not just about attending and participating in meetings and public events, but also about working through often very complex draft resolutions.
Frank Klingebiel emphasized that the committed council and local council members have been involved in various goals and projects and are still involved in some cases. In this way, the committed members help to shape the image of the local councils and the council of the city of Salzgitter.
It is regrettable that a great deal of expertise and experience is lost with the departing members. However, it was pleasing that younger people were also interested in local political work and successfully stood as candidates in local politics last year. It is also pleasing to see that many long-standing campaigners are still involved.
Nowadays, local politics is dependent on many developments and decisions that are outside of our sphere of influence. "Nevertheless, we can make a difference. And we have always used our scope for action. You have been involved in writing the history of our city and its districts. You have played a key role in shaping the development of this city. They are role models for all Salzgitter residents," said Frank Klingebiel.
