Further development of Salzgittersee

The lake should be freely accessible to all and fulfills various functions. Based on the results of the public participation process for the further development of Salzgittersee, work began in May 2023 on developing a target and structural concept for the Salzgittersee area. With the involvement of all relevant stakeholders and the public, the suggestions and findings were incorporated into the concept over the course of the planning process. The following can be said about the planning development goals:

The lake area is divided into five thematic areas. Specific uses and qualities are assigned to the thematic areas:

Ø City + Sport

Ø River + Landscape

Ø Island park

Ø Water + Wind

Ø sand + sun

For the first time, the lake is being considered as a whole. The sports, leisure and recreational functions are to be strengthened and the lake is to become an important building block for urban development planning. The connection and integration of the adjacent districts is presented and the significance for the city is described. This also includes the description and improvement of accessibility and mobility.

The following planning ideas are described in detail:

The lakeside path on the eastern shore will be redesigned and upgraded. In the beach area, the connection to the rear path will be strengthened and a promenade will be created in the city + sport area. A thematic bridge will connect the Lebenstedt and Fredenberg districts. This will be supported by the recreational facilities on the shore opposite each other. Near the hospital, on the Schölke and on the former outdoor pool site, opportunities are being created for additional structural uses with a focus on health, sport, leisure and tourism. Local public transport will be improved. More journeys at "leisure times" and stops close to the lake contribute to this. Crossing options for pedestrians and cyclists will be created and improved. Existing facilities will be maintained, modernized and improved. A covered soccer pitch, a skate park and tennis courts are to be built and modernized. The further development of the lake area will take place as part of a cooperative competition.

By involving all relevant stakeholders and the public in the planning processes, there is a high level of acceptance of the results. There is a clear planning objective and an overall spatial development perspective. The development potential is described and clearly presented. An urban development and landscape planning competition is to be held for the areas defined in the concept, including the lakeside path as a significant, networking element, in order to ensure the urban development qualities of the plans in the comparative context of the best designs. Freely accessible use of the lake areas must be ensured.

The involvement of all relevant stakeholders and the public in the planning processes as well as the high participation rate are positive. Development potential could lie in the area of the adjacent neighborhoods.

Measures at Salzgittersee 2024 to 2026

2024:

Dog beach on Seeinsel: filling in sand and building a shelter
Construction of three shelters at the pirate playground, renewal of 7 seating groups, barrier-free conversion of 2 seating areas
Filling in missing sand due to wind and water erosion at the pirate playground, surf club and Café del Lago area
Adoption of the Salzgittersee structural concept
Power connection for the Cafè del Lago parking lot has been established so that the lighting can be connected from here.

2025:

Implementation of an architectural competition with a focus on "nature-oriented design, sport and recreation"
2025/2026: Implementation of a landscape architecture competition to link existing structures and create new recreational qualities in the area between the Stadtbad and Reppnersche Bucht (Café de Lago).
Renovation of the tennis courts.
Project decision for the addition of lighting to the access routes and parking lots: With the resolution of the planned submission "Lighting at the lake" by the 2025 summer vacations, the following measures could still be implemented in the second half of the year (lighting of the Cafè del Lago parking lot, west parking lot and the "small" access routes to the lake).
Bäder, Sport und Freizeit GmbH (BSF): Construction work on the year-round outdoor pool at Stadtbad
BSF: Renewal of the supply facilities at the camper van site (fresh water, grey water, toilet cassette, electricity)
Measures at the municipal waste management company (SRB): Replacement of 10 defective waste garbage cans, construction of 12 additional bench spaces along the island circular path, planting of 10 trees to shade existing and new bench spaces, renewal of seating and other equipment at 3 barbecue areas, construction of an additional wayfinding aid in the form of an information board on the western shore in front of the island bridge, barrier-free bathing access into the lake on the western shore, renewal of various play elements on the pirate playground (1st construction phase), path renovation and repair on the lake circular path and on the island.

2026:

From 2026/2027: Construction of the lighting on the access paths and parking lots: With the resolution of the planned submission "Lighting at the lake" by the 2025 summer vacation, the following measures are to be implemented in 2026: Lighting of access routes between the Pirate Playground and Stadtbad, parking lot in front of Stadtbad and in the south parallel to the Fuhse up to approx. "Forellenhof"
2026/2027: Construction of the skating facility: Initial planning results are expected by the end of 2025
SRB measures: Barrier-free access to the lake on the eastern shore in the form of a footbridge with a platform on the water, path renovation on the lakeside path, renovation of various play elements on the pirate playground (2nd construction phase)
