Stories of Salzgitter's "guest worker" generation wanted

Salder Castle Municipal Museum and Municipal Archive are asking for objects and reports on the life of Salzgitter's "guest worker" generation.

Katrin Helm and Arne Homann with a sign from Stahlwerke Peine-Salzgitter AG from the period 1970-1992, inscribed in Turkish and German.

"Guest workers" - from the 1950s onwards, they also helped Salzgitter to cope with the acute shortage of workers during the German "economic miracle". However, they were often not always treated as guests in return. At the time, they were often deployed in the hardest, dirtiest and most dangerous areas of work. Nevertheless, the "guest workers" also contributed to the country's prosperity. And many did not return to their homeland, but stayed. They started families, became German citizens - and have long since become an integral part of Salzgitter's urban society.

Arne Homann, director of the Salder Castle Municipal Museum, and Katrin Helm, head of the municipal archives, have noticed that this relevant topic has played too little of a role in their two museums to date. They now want to change that together. Whether from Italy, Spain, Greece, Turkey, Morocco, South Korea, Portugal, Yugoslavia or other places in the world: all Salzgitter residents who would like to tell their story or that of relatives and donate documents, photos or memorabilia to the archive and museum are very welcome.
