The historic vehicle was moved to the "sheepfold". It previously stood in the "barn" for a long time. However, this can no longer be used as an exhibition area for conservation reasons.
.
However, the bus first had to be made fit for the complex transportation. Due to its long downtime, it can no longer drive under its own power. In order to maneuver it out of the "barn", smaller wheels had to be fitted, as the vehicle is simply too high for the gates. Even bringing it in was extremely time-consuming at the time. The current project required the production of new wheel hubs and succeeded thanks to the friendly support of MAN. It was initiated by Jörg Podehl and technically realized by Ralf Kolshorn, who drove the bus during the move.
The museum's workshop team actively supported the transportation and the necessary preparatory work - first with muscle power and then with a forklift truck.
Unfortunately, the vehicle is not yet on permanent display. The exhibition section in the "sheepfold" is currently being refurbished. It is expected to open in the second half of 2026. Then, in addition to the history of rural life from 1750 to 1950, there will also be many Salzgitter-related exhibits on the subject of mobility.
Museum director Arne Homann still has one big goal in mind: the bus is to be made ready for use again so that it can be driven again in the future, for example at the museum festival.
