Completion of the “St. Bernward Forecourt Redevelopment” Project Is Delayed

The “Redesign of the St. Bernward Forecourt” construction project in Steterburg was actually supposed to be completed in July. The city of Salzgitter regrets the delay.

The reason for this was that construction work had to be suspended right at the start of the project. This was because, upon opening the streets, it was discovered that several sections of the road showed discrepancies with the soil survey that had been prepared in advance. Disposing of the excavated material proved to be significantly more labor-intensive than originally planned. The entire process lasted until the end of May.

As a result, the pedestrian routes—and thus the construction site layout—had to be adjusted to accommodate the new course of construction. This meant that necessary barriers had to be moved and repositioned, which also added to the time required.

As a result, the original schedule—which called for the completion of construction in July—could not be met. The department now hopes for a smooth continuation of construction, with completion expected in the fourth quarter of this year.

The City of Salzgitter is aware that a construction site, with its associated closures, can mean restrictions and longer travel times for all road users, and that corresponding detours may be perceived as time-consuming.

The city therefore continues to ask residents and road users for their understanding regarding the restrictions associated with the construction project and assures them that every effort is being made to complete the project as quickly as possible.

What is the current status of the construction work?

What has already happened or been implemented?

  • Both bus stops are accessible, paved, and equipped with tactile paving
  • The sidewalk has been completed from the Kloster Nord bus stop to just past the intersection with Klosterweg
  • Work has begun on the sidewalks in front of St. Bernward and at the Kloster Süd bus stop, and these sections must be completed at the connection points
  • The subgrade improvement of the roads has been completed up to the asphalt surface layer; only the connection area to the curve on Gerhart-Hauptmann-Straße has not yet been completed
  • The median strip has been constructed and completed

What else needs to be done?

  • The recycling collection site and the connection to the sidewalk and the forest trail through Lange Holz that begins there must be constructed. Until the paving is completed, the forest trail is unfortunately inaccessible from this location. Visitors to the forest can reach it via the southern end of Pappeldamm. Cyclists heading toward Eisenhüttenstraße are asked by the city to take a detour via Lange Hecke Street/pedestrian and bike path.
  • Work must begin on the curve from Gerhart-Hauptmann-Straße into Pappeldamm: To this end, the current traffic routing will be changed so that residents can access the Pappeldamm dead-end street and the Family Center at any time via a temporary lane.
  • Paving of the intersection in front of the family center will take place after the subgrade has been improved throughout the entire curved section
  • The waiting area in front of the Kloster Süd bus stop will be constructed using concrete.

Funding and Financing of the Construction Project

The implementation of the “Redesign of the St. Bernward Forecourt” project is part of the Integrated Action Plan for the City of Salzgitter’s overall urban development initiative, “Steterburg.”

Since 2015, Steterburg has received funding through the “Social Cohesion” urban development program (formerly “Social City”). The program is jointly funded by the federal government, the state, and local municipalities.

Two-thirds of the funding is provided by the federal and state governments as a grant to the City of Salzgitter. The city contributes its own share of one-third of the expenses.

The enhancement of public spaces plays a central role in the urban renewal efforts in Steterburg. By improving the residential environment and constructing spaces for relaxation, play, and social interaction, the quality of life in the redevelopment area can be significantly improved. At the same time, this can have a positive impact on the neighborhood’s image.
