Salzgitter

Berlin Wall section is unveiled

Series of events to mark 20 years of German unity: Together with its Thuringian twin town Gotha, Salzgitter will commemorate 20 years of German unity.

On Monday, November 9, at 11 a.m., a ceremony will begin at Salzgitter-Bad High School to mark the inauguration of the Central Registration Office of the State Justice Administrations memorial, a section of the former Berlin Wall.

The event will be attended by 100 teenagers and young people from Gotha aged between 16 and 27 as well as pupils from the Salzgitter-Bad grammar school. They will be addressed by the two mayors Frank Klingebiel and Knut Kreuch (Gotha). The speaker will be the former spokesman of the Central Registration Office, Dr. Hans-Jürgen Grasemann.

At 12.30 pm, the memorial will be inaugurated with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque in front of the police building on Pfingstanger in Salzgitter-Bad. Hundreds of visitors and guests from the Thuringian twin town of Gotha, Salzgitter and the region are expected to attend this event, so traffic disruptions are to be expected. The same applies to the KVG public transport service with its stops in this area. The city therefore appeals to motorists in particular to avoid the Pfingstanger/Schützenplatz area as far as possible from 12 noon. The event will end shortly after 1 pm.

Since the Wall was built in 1961, the Central Registration Office of the state justice administrations has systematically compiled all available information on crimes and violations of human rights at the German-German border. For the guests from Thuringia, a city tour to prominent points in Salzgitter's contemporary history is also planned, such as the monument in the city center of Lebenstedt.

The Berlin Wall piece was purchased at auction by the Cultural Department at the beginning of the year and arrived in Salzgitter in June. A real estate company from Lünen in Westphalia had acquired it from the federal government. Its original location was on the corner of Spreebogen and Schiffbauerdamm/Reinhardtstraße. The piece of wall weighs 2.7 tons, is one metre wide and 370 centimetres high.

Also on Monday, November 9, the exhibition "Rückblicke - Einblicke: Ommo Wille" will be opened by its director Michael Osann at 7 p.m. at the Volkshochschule in Alt-Lebenstedt. The artist in attendance will present pictures from a bygone era from the inner life of the GDR.

On Thursday, November 5, at 7 pm in the Kniestedter Church in Salzgitter-Bad, there will be a lecture event on "Remembrance as a mission - the work of the Federal Foundation for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship". The speaker will be its managing director, Dr. Anna Kaminsky. Mayor Frank Klingebiel will give a welcoming address.
