Salzgitter

25.09.2013 Salzgitter is fit for the future

Over the course of almost two years, more than 250 representatives from business, administration, institutions, organizations and associations worked in 14 project groups on the guidelines for "Salzgitter 2020" in a broad public dialogue.

On Thursday, September 26, 2013, a milestone event will be held in the Kulturscheune to take stock of the situation, announced Lord Mayor Frank Klingebiel.

Klingebiel emphasizes that there has never been a participation process of this kind in Salzgitter before. The results would serve a sustainable child, family and education policy that does not lose sight of intergenerational justice.

The process that has been initiated sets out clear goals, describes the instruments and takes into account available resources and opportunities. Citizens had developed projects that would result in tangible improvements to their quality of life, work and living in the city.

According to the Lord Mayor, the overall view resulted in 78 proposals for seven outstanding key objectives focusing on care, education, strengthening the business location, citizen services and family-friendly urban development.

Examples:

  • Expansion of childcare places for primary school children by 2016
  • Expansion of childcare for under-threes and quality assurance
  • The achieved exemption from contributions for childcare from the age of 3 and childcare exchange
  • Establishment of all-day schools
  • Strengthening the Ostfalia and BBS educational locations
  • Expansion of the schools' IT networks
  • The BONA program for career guidance in scientific professions
  • Expansion of children's and youth clubs and community facilities in the urban renewal areas
  • Kulturentwicklungsplan
  • Establishment of an integration advisory board
  • Development of a playground concept
  • Promotion of recreational sports for children and families
  • Expansion of offers for senior citizens
  • Child and senior-friendly design of public buildings
  • Strengthening prevention work
  • Development of a holistic marketing strategy for Salzgitter

The milestone event aims to provide information on what has already been implemented from the "Salzgitter 2020 Guidelines" work program. It documents which initial steps have been successfully taken and that the strategic path is the right one. It promotes further progress in the process. According to Klingebiel, not everything has already been realized, but there will be no standstill even if the budget situation deteriorates.

The Lord Mayor was pleased that the wealth of milestones achieved showed that the proposed projects had been carefully selected. This underlines the outstanding work in the groups. The members had consistently focused on the goal of making demographic development, improving the level of education and the prospects for the development of the business location the decisive criteria for measures.

One major interim success of the child and family policy, according to Klingebiel, is the stabilization of the population. Since spring 2013, an upward trend has been observed. This means that the positive effects on the living situation formulated in the projects of the guideline process have reached the population.

Demographic change must be countered with stable population figures. The recognized factors are the support of families, raising the level of education so that young people can shape their own lives as qualified specialists, as well as perspectives for the coexistence of generations.

Klingebiel concluded: "Instead of actionism, we need to plan ahead. Milestones are decision points. It is important to analyze framework conditions seriously, critically and creatively in order to find suitable ways and means of implementing projects in the interests of the well-being of the city as a whole. The Salzgitter 2020 guideline process will set and challenge further milestones."
