In addition, those responsible engaged in discussions with the guests and took away many ideas, wishes and criticisms.
Around 50 citizens and representatives from local politics, the KVG, the advisory board for people with disabilities and the youth parliament took part in the information event at the Alte Feuerwache.
In its presentation, the engineering firm stadtraum, commissioned by the City of Salzgitter's Environment Department, presented the investigations in Salzgitter, analyses and next steps.
The advantages of Salzgitter are, for example, its good location and good road and rail connections. The disadvantages of the city with its 31 districts are, for example, the large area and the long distances between the districts. The road network for private transport is very well developed in the commuter city, but in view of the need to reduce greenhouse gases, local public transport needs to be optimized so that more people use it.
To this end, the engineering firm stadtraum has already implemented a stakeholder workshop and an online survey on ÖPNV.
"At this event, we would now like to find out from you in which direction ÖPNV should develop," emphasized Winfried Müller-Brandes from the engineering office stadtraum. Citizens were able to express their ideas, wishes and criticism on three boards at three market stalls.
The result: many ideas that were visibly attached to the boards and discussed in the respective groups.
What happens next?
The engineering office is now evaluating all the responses. The results of this event will be incorporated into the catalog of measures to be drawn up, as will the other participation events and the previous analysis of the current situation.
In addition, the greenhouse gas balance will be included in the report to be compiled, which will then be presented to the political bodies for a decision.

Further information on the Salzgitter City Council's mandate:
ÖPNV - SZ - Masterplan Mobility 2025: council resolution (submission 4287/17):
The administration is to draw up an urban "ÖPNV - SZ - Masterplan Mobility 2025" in cooperation with KVG and submit it to the Council for a decision.
"The aim is to link and harmonize the changing mobility needs of citizens in local public transport with the requirements of climate protection. The local transport plan 2020 Greater Braunschweig must be taken into account.
In addition, a marketing concept including a ticket distribution system is to be developed to help motivate citizens to use ÖPNV more than before.
Keywords of the master plan should be, for example
- Reassessment and optimization of a comprehensive transport network, the range of services including connections/transfers - also with other modes of transport
- Traffic engineering measures, e.g. acceleration measures/ priority for buses
- Expansion of flexible forms of service, especially for rural areas
- Presentation of modern, attractive vehicles, climate-friendly drive technologies, procurement strategies
- Modern and disabled-friendly design/expansion of bus stops (including their accessibility), e.g. with modern passenger information, such as digital displays and WCs at central and large bus stops
- Optimization of so-called "route chains": - Consideration of access traffic at stops, e.g. from bicycle parking facilities, P&R facilities - Reassessment and development of parking space management strategies
The "ÖPNV - SZ - Masterplan Mobility 2025" should be drawn up as a "step-by-step plan", contain a list of priorities with a cost plan and present funding opportunities.
The master plan should also provide for an evaluation to review/adjust measures."
