Salzgitter

Financing project for violence counseling centers

With the "Words help women" project, the Lower Saxony Ministry of Social Affairs finances the costs of translators for counseling female refugees.

In Salzgitter, these are the women's shelter (telephone number 13033), the BISS counseling center (telephone number 0160 / 92117110) and the pregnancy conflict counseling center Profamilia (telephone number 05341 / 14491.)

Women on the run are particularly at risk of experiencing violence or they may have been exposed to sexual assault in their home country or here in Germany. With the "Words help women" project, the state of Lower Saxony would like to facilitate counseling at violence counseling centers and women's and girls' shelters. Translators can also be brought in for consultations on pregnancy, birth or abortion at the pregnancy and pregnancy conflict counseling centers. This overcomes language barriers and facilitates the necessary counseling work.

Simone Semmler, Equal Opportunities Officer for the city of Salzgitter, explains that the "Words help women" project is aimed at all refugee women who arrived in Germany after January 1, 2015, if they are living in emergency accommodation or are already receiving benefits under the Asylum Seekers' Benefits Act, as well as those who have no income of their own after completing the asylum procedure.

"The protection of physical and emotional integrity, like equal rights for women and men, is a fundamental human right protected by the constitution and other laws," says Semmler. "In this respect, it is only logical that the country should provide resources to protect the rights of those affected by war and flight who are seeking protection and safety here."
