Action plan for implementing the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

At its meeting on 15.12.2022 in the council chamber of the city of Salzgitter, the city's Disability Officer presented the Chairman of the Advisory Board for People with Disabilities with the hot-off-the-press action plan for implementing the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, translated into "easy language".

"Easy language" is intended for all people who have difficulty understanding long texts. It reduces the amount of text, difficult words and long sentences. Instead, short sentences, simple words, large font and pictures are used to convey the content.

Following the publication of the action plan in 2021, the Advisory Board for People with Disabilities and the city administration worked hard on the translation.

The action plan is particularly important for people with disabilities, as it describes the issues of those affected. It is therefore all the more important that those affected understand the plan in its entirety. It was therefore a great wish of the advisory board and the city of Salzgitter that the action plan be translated into "easy language".

After members of the Advisory Board for People with Disabilities and the administration had produced a preliminary draft, it was handed over to a translation agency of the "Netzwerk Leichte Sprache" for critical examination and certification.

These are offices that are authorized to award the "Easy Language" seal. The text is not checked by typical translators. Instead, the work has to face a jury of people with disabilities. In this case, it was four people with learning difficulties from the Osnabrück area.
