They were previously elected for five years by the Salzgitter City Council. The incumbent arbitrators used the event to welcome the "newcomers" and introduce them to their work.
"The office of arbitrator has become more important in recent years," said Eckart Müller-Zitzke, director of the local court. This is due to the fact that the number of disputes between neighbors has increased.
The task of the arbitrator is the amicable settlement of disputes in private law matters. "Citizens come to the six arbitrators in Salzgitter in the case of property matters, but also in the case of insults," explained the district director. Disputes between neighbors over the height of bushes and shrubs, as well as disputes between family members over inheritance, are part of the men's everyday business. "They carry out their duties conscientiously and impartially," said the district director, thanking the incumbent arbitrators for their work.
He urged the "newcomers" to act impartially and independently. "Beware of becoming partisan," he said. Fairness dictates that both sides should always be consulted in disputes before the arbitrator attempts to mediate. This has also become more difficult nowadays because more and more disputes are being taken to court without any attempt at amicable mediation.
Eckart Müller-Zitzke emphasized that the city of Salzgitter is the point of contact for organizational issues; for legal issues, the volunteers can turn to the district court with their concerns. There are six districts and six arbitrators in Salzgitter, which citizens can contact depending on where they live.
Administrative board member Wolfram Skorczyk thanked the arbitrators on behalf of the city of Salzgitter for their voluntary commitment to the community.
The incumbent arbitrators offered their support to the new arbitrators Ulrike Donat and Andreas Kleinschmidt in their new voluntary work. In addition, all arbitrators receive training. Introductory courses and further training, which are offered regularly, are also helpful.
With this knowledge, the new arbitrators are optimally prepared for cases when citizens call with the words "I have a problem".
The costs of the training are covered by the city of Salzgitter. The city pays an annual flat-rate expense allowance for the costs incurred in connection with the work as an arbitrator. The work is subject to constant supervision by the local court.
