Salzgitter

Welcoming culture for refugees

In the second half of 2013, it became apparent that the city of Salzgitter would have to take in more and more refugees.

With the aim of networked and coordinated action, the city council convened a "Refugee Round Table" with all the relevant specialist services, independent organizations with their advisory structures, schools and security authorities.

It turned out that there were gaps in the information available and that the help on offer was not coordinated. In the interests of those affected, good networking is important for trusting and effective cooperation between all stakeholders.

In the fall of 2013, the "Refugee Round Table in Salzgitter" was formed. At the same time, the administration worked on the implementation of a council mandate for the decentralized accommodation of refugees and asylum seekers.

Participants in the "Round Table" are

- the Caritas Association
- the Workers' Welfare Association
- the Diakonisches Werk
- the Mothers' Center
- a representative of the school principals
- the volunteer center
- the police inspectorate
- the Job Center
- the relevant specialist services of the city administration
(Health, Order, Education and Integration, Children, Youth and Family,
social planning, social affairs and senior citizens)

The following work program was agreed:

- Exchange of current information and joint assessment
of the current situation,
- Continuation and expansion of networking,
- Inventory and transparency of individual services,
- identification of needs, coordination of services to avoid
avoid duplication of services,
- Evaluation of accommodation options for future
people to be admitted in the future,
- Exchange on specialist topics (language support,
health situation and vaccinations, hygiene, further involvement of
integration of foreign language support staff,
further development of preventative services),
- Further development of the welcoming culture.

Results to date:

- The compilation of the advisory services enables a quick

services at just as many locations are available in at least
13 different languages),
- Translation of existing information into languages of origin,
- Transition management from the central housing units to decentralized
decentralized apartments has been installed,
- Decentralized accommodation taking into account the integrated
social structure planning of the city of Salzgitter in areas with good
infrastructure,
- Coordinated establishment of further language support programs for
school children,
- Targeted use of bridge-builders with and without a migration background
without a migration background,
- Supporting offers on current topics (hygiene training,

- Better recording of the health situation of refugees
and establishment of further support options (checking vaccination status and
vaccination status and required vaccinations, low-threshold advice in the

- Establishment of further low-barrier language support by
