These come from so-called regionalization funds. Projects in Salzgitter are also implemented from these funds.
As part of a joint position paper, the three major cities each named projects on the basis of which the additional annual allocations of € 25 million were justified.
The initiative was successful. This has been certain since the commitments made last Friday by Minister President Stephan Weil and Transport Minister Olaf Lies.
Lord Mayor Frank Klingebiel emphasizes that the upper central axis Wolfsburg-Braunschweig-Salzgitter must be strengthened first and that rural areas will also benefit from this. Their improved links should be taken into account and implemented in a second step.
The city of Salzgitter now expects the Zweckverband Großraum Braunschweig (ZGB), which will receive the €25 million in additional funds from the revision of the Lower Saxony Local Transport Act to perform its duties as a public transport authority, to prioritize the implementation and financing of the projects in Salzgitter.
Klingebiel: "Mr. Tanke, as Chairman of the Association Assembly, has promised me that Salzgitter will not fall behind in the distribution of funds. I expect him and the ZGB to prioritize the projects in Salzgitter."
For Salzgitter, these are the projects:
Service improvements between Salzgitter-Lebenstedt - Braunschweig Hbf (30 min. frequency SZ-BS); RB 44
In December 2014, the Diesel-Netz Niedersachsen-Südost, Partial Lot 1 (DINSO I, operator DB Regio Nord) started an hourly service from Monday to Friday with modernized Alstom diesel railcars. There are plans to extend this service to the weekend. As parts of the line are in a comparatively poor condition, measures are planned to speed up journey times and increase capacity.
The aim is to order a 30-minute interval with shorter journey times in order to be able to offer the many commuters between Salzgitter and Braunschweig or Wolfsburg an attractive local transport connection that meets the national standard.
Service improvements between Salzgitter-Ringelheim - Salzgitter-Bad - Braunschweig Hbf (30-minute intervals SZ-BS); RB 46
Trains on this route have also been running every hour from Monday to Saturday since December 2014. An hourly service between Braunschweig and Ringelheim is also urgently required on Sundays and public holidays, i.e. during off-peak times, in order to meet the increasing demand, especially in leisure and tourist traffic towards the Harz Mountains.
A 30-minute interval is planned from Monday to Friday during rush hour. This also requires a modernization of the route in order to reduce travel times.
Promotion of the mobility center at Lebenstedt station
The train stations Braunschweig Hbf, Wolfsburg Hbf and Salzgitter-Lebenstedt already function as ÖPNV hubs for the many commuters from the region. These three locations are to be further enhanced by the construction of future-oriented mobility stations.
To date, there is no central mobility hub in SZ and an inadequate structural link between rail (main station) and bus (ZOB).
It is planned to provide for the cross-modal networking of urban and regional transport with the aim of integrating existing services from the areas of regional rail, RegioBus, city bus, P+R, bicycle transport/B+R, car and shared bicycles as well as electromobility.
The construction of a mobility center in Salzgitter-Lebenstedt is therefore planned in construction phases with project costs of €1.2 million. The first construction phase includes the construction of a service station with the modules, ticket sales, bicycle station and toilet facilities at a project cost of € 690,000.
Expansion of train stations and stops with the creation of bicycle parking facilities
The Salzgitter-Bad and Salzgitter-Ringelheim train stations and the Salzgitter-Thiede stop are to be supplemented with parking facilities for bicycles and pedelecs, including charging infrastructure (bicycle transport/B+R and shared bicycles), in order to create a cross-modal network of different types of mobility. There are also plans to relocate and/or expand the Salzgitter-Thiede stop. This requires planning by DB Station & Service and the initiative of the ZGB.
The ZGB is currently preparing a potential study on the planned line extension between Fredenberg and Lebenstedt, which was approved by the council. Klingebiel says: "Only when the results of the potential study are available can the economic viability and sense of such a measure be assessed."
